Back Cover:

Wall-tent stoves fired up until you have to peel back the doorflaps; butterflies and flowers splashing light and color in high mountain meadows; mountain horses standing patiently in moonlit timber a world away from the back 40; rows of lodgepole pine so even they suggest the work of some great hand; the dive of an osprey, like a shooting star, seen just by you; the hot breath of a bull elk in the September rut—these are the experiences found in elk country and here in the pages of Visions of Elk Country.

Join Lance Schelvan and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation on a journey you won't forget, and discover why the bugles of wild elk ring forever in the hearts of those who have fallen happily under the spell of elk country.

Excerpt:

What is elk country? For sure, it’s the stuff of magazine covers—the jagged crags and hanging valleys that run down the Rockies from British Columbia clear to Mexico. It is the beasts themselves: elk, goats, grizzlies, bighorns, pronghorns. But it’s also big trees and little shafts of light; quiet moments when a great gray owl alights on a nearby snag; good friends stepping out of the lodgepoles at twilight, heading for camp. Elk country is all about the kinds of things you begin to see when you wander deep, long, and often within it.

And that is what Lance Schelvan has done for the past forty years. Luckily for us, he always took his Nikons along for the ride. The images he captured for Visions of Elk Country are fond, backward glances across four decades and thousands of miles of elk country. But they are in equal measure hopeful visions of what the future may hold for these wild places and the wildlife within.
